MSSI & Neuro Update 2014 & Caregiver - Meeting at Taj Coromandel.

The new year started with a bang “ Neuro Updates 2014” programme. We had two programmes – one for MS persons and next programme  one with Caregivers of the MS person.

The meeting took place at Taj Coromandel Hotel on January 25, 2014 with our MS Persons. Dr. Suresh Kumar  a very eminent Neuro Physician hailing from Trivandrum was the guest speaker. He emphasized on how to handle MS in a positive way. There was also an interactive session with MS Person where he answered their queries , and gave them tips on how to face MS just like any other disease.

The next meeting was with the Caregivers on January 26, 2014.  It was a very successful meeting with caregivers as there was  interactive session,where the caregivers asked numerous queries on how to handle their loved ones with MS. Again here  the Caregivers should have a physical and healthy mind. 

MSSI - Annual Picnic on December 22, 2013

72 MS Persons and their caregivers boarded 2 buses on the morning of December 22, 2103 to have a picnic at Mamallapuram – a seaside resort 40 km from Chennai.

Since it was the eve of Christmas, one of the Volunteer dressed as Santa Claus danced and sang with children and distributed chocolates. There were games of Bingo and Dum Charades followed by a sumptuous lunch and desserts.

In the afternoon , many of the participants ventured to play in the water on the shores of Hotel Sea Breeze with a coast guard watching nearby. The birthday’s of MS persons in the month of December was celebrated with cutting of  a birthday cake and lots of singing and many eats for tea. As the sun was setting  over the horizon, all boarded the buses, ready to return to Chennai , with the unison requests to have a picnic soon again.

MSSI @ 'Joy of Giving' and 'Seva Mela' 2013

The first week of Oct 2013 has been very eventful for MSSI and we had actively participated in ‘Joy of Giving’ and ‘Seva Mela’.   While with ‘Joy of Giving ‘, we were able to reach out to the general public with ‘Seva Mela’ we were able to connect with corporates and other NGOs.

As we all know, MS still remains to be an unknown disease/disorder.  So, the main focus area at both these events was to create awareness about MS.  

During the course of the week, Hardly 10 people out of thousands, whom we met during these days,  knew about MS.  Out of these 10 people, nearly 6 were from the medical profession.   In general, less than 0.2% of the society has heard of MS.  In this scenario, MSSI is glad that we were able to reach out to about 6000 people, distributing flyers, explaining

1.       What MS is.

2.       The symptoms of MS.

3.       Importance of early detection and treatment of MS.

4.       The role played by MSSI.

5.       Role of corporates and society in combating MS.

All of this was possible because of the help and support extended to us by BOSCH, FORUM VIJAYA MALL, PRINCE ARCADE and volunteers from HCL Technologies Ltd, RR Donnelly, Caterpillar and student-volunteers from the Statistics Department, Loyola College.  Our sincere thanks to all of them.

United Way of Chennai (UWC), is a non-government, organization dedicated to improving lives in Tamil Nadu by identifying and addressing the long term needs of communities by promoting and encouraging voluntary charitable service and volunteerism.

and

CIOSA (Confederation of Indian Organisations For Service and Advocacy) is a collaborative platform for NGOs, corporate, and Individuals for mutual learning, resource sharing and collective espousal of social causes.

Together, they are facilitating SEVA MELA 2013 on the 5^th and 6^th of October 2013 at the Guild of Service, between 2pm and 10pm.

Seva mela will be a great opportunity for the corporate volunteers to join hands and have a feel of the cause and the related NGO.

Spreading awareness about MS has always been very important for MSSI.  With this in focus, MSSI is participating in the ‘Seva Mela’ this year.

JOY OF GIVING 2013

Over the last 5 years, Joy of Giving Week, is being held during the days of 2-Oct to 8-Oct. This is an event promoting and celebrating the idea of "caring and sharing".

 

As is being done in the recent past, under the umbrella of 'Joy of Giving', MSSI is also putting up 'Wish Tree' at prominent locations in Chennai -

Paper Bags, Comedy and Birthday Cake

Our Social Event on Saturday was a great success! Starting with a great workshop on how to create tough paper bags out of newspaper (yes, it is possible), we were then graced with some brilliant comedy, courtesy of the Humour Club International.

Afterwards, it was time for birthday celebrations, and some catch-up between old and new friends.

A great day all round!
