MSSI Chennai Chapter - What We Do...

We are the MSSI Chennai Chapter, a patient support group for people suffering from MS in Chennai and its surrounding areas. Our main aim is to improve the quality of life for people with MS. We achieve this through providing support like physiotherapy, MRI scans, covering some hospital costs and medicine, provision of equipment for care, transport, employment, educational support and counseling. We organise seminars from experts in MS, who are able to explain advances in treatment and management to our members and staff.

MS is a common neurological disorder, diagnosed in young adults. While MS is not contagious,  or shorten life-expectancy, it does decrease a patients quality of life. Due to an auto-immune reaction to the insulation of the Central Nervous System, nerve signals may short circuit, causing reduced or lost body function.

MS effects individuals differently. Symptoms may come and go, or progressively worsen over time. It is all dependent on the scale and location of the damage to the myellin sheaths that protect the Central Nervous System. Early symptoms of MS include tingling sensations, numbness, blurred vision, weakness in limbs. As MS progresses, patients can experience fatigue, muscle spasms, difficulty walking, speech problems, thinking problems, bladder problems and abnormal sensations.

There is no cure to MS yet, but there are ways to manage the disease. Medications are available to slow the progression of MS, and to alleviate some of the symptoms. Counseling services help patients to maintain positive attitudes and outlooks, as do MS support groups and societies. Physiotherapy and exercise help to slow and manage the progression of MS.

At the MSSI Chennai Chapter we provide these services, but we need your help to do more. More volunteers would allow us to make regular visits to offer the counseling patients need, and to allow us to increase awareness in the local community, as MS is often overlooked by families and doctors alike. Donations allow us to provide more medicine for patients, and help us to test and treat new patients.
